Saving Money? Not In This Economy – 22 Facts That Prove Middle Class Families Are Being Savagely Crushed

The American Dream
March 18, 2011

The 22 facts that you are about to read are all real, although admittedly they are hard to believe.  The sad truth is that millions of middle class families in the United States today are being savagely crushed by this economy.  Most American families would like to be saving money, paying the mortgage and living the American Dream, but with each passing month those things are becoming more difficult.  Rapidly rising prices for basic necessities such as food and gas are absolutely crippling the finances of millions of middle class American families right now.  How is a family even supposed to make a budget when the average price of gasoline goes up 42 cents a gallon in a single month?  What are we all supposed to do when we walk into our supermarkets and find that the old “regular prices” have become the new “sale prices”?  Should we all not be deeply concerned that the price of food in the United States went up at the fastest rate in 36 years last month?  How are we all supposed to keep our families above the poverty line when the number of good paying jobs keeps shrinking?  In America today, being a member of the middle class is like playing a game of musical chairs.  You know that they are going to keep pulling chairs out of the game, and you just hope that it is not going to be your turn next.
Sadly, large numbers of Americans do keep falling out of the middle class.  The number of Americans on food stamps just keeps increasing every single month.  The number of Americans on Medicaid just keeps increasing every single month.  The number of American children living in poverty just keeps increasing every single month.
If the U.S. economy is actually getting “better”, then why does the middle class keep on shrinking?  Everywhere you turn there are families in deep economic pain.  Unemployment is rampant and even those families that do have jobs are really struggling to make ends meet as prices rise rapidly.
Unfortunately, the global economy looks like it is going to get even worse.  The recent crisis in Japan is going to have a ripple effect across the entire globe.  The chaos in the Middle East is certainly not helping things either.  It certainly appears that we could be on the verge of another major economic downturn.
And that would not be good news for the U.S. middle class.  The truth is that the U.S. middle class has already been hurt enough.
The following are 22 facts that prove that middle class families across America are being savagely crushed by this economy….

#1 Last month food prices in the United States rose at the fastest rate in 36 years.
#2 The average price of a gallon of gasoline in the United States is now $3.55.  That represents an increase of 42 cents a gallon in just one month.
#3 According to the Oil Price Information Service, U.S. drivers spent an average of $347 on gasoline during the month of February, which was 30 percent more than a year earlier.
#4 According to the U.S. Energy Department, the average U.S. household will spend approximately $700 more on gasoline in 2011 than it did during 2010.
#5 According to the U.S. Labor Department, the cost of living in the United States is higher than it ever has been before.  The “Chained Consumer Price Index” hit a new all-time high during the month of February.
#6 During this most recent economic downturn, employee compensation in the United States has been the lowest that it has been relative to gross domestic product in over 50 years.
#7 When you adjust wages for inflation, middle class workers in the United States make less money today than they did back in 1971.
#8 For most middle class American families, their homes are their most valuable financial assets.  Since the real estate peak, U.S. home values have fallen by a staggering 6.3 trillion dollars.
#9 In 2010, for the first time ever more than a million U.S. families lost their homes to foreclosure, and that number is expected to go even higher in 2011.

#10 Two years ago, the average U.S. homeowner that was being foreclosed upon had not made a mortgage payment in 11 months.  Today, the average U.S. homeowner that is being foreclosed upon has not made a mortgage payment in 17 months.
#11 Approximately half of all American workers make $25,000 a year or less.
#12 Approximately one-third of all Americans have no savings and no retirement funds.
#13 As 2007 began, only about 26 million Americans were on food stamps, but today over 44 million Americans are now on food stamps.
#14 Back in 1965, only one out of every 50 Americans was on Medicaid.  Today, one out of every 6 Americans is on Medicaid.
#15 Only 47 percent of working-age Americans have a full-time job at this point.
#16 Many American families would love to be saving money, but the reality is that a huge percentage of them are drowning in credit card debt.  Total U.S. credit card debt is more than 8 times larger than it was just 30 years ago.
#17 The CredAbility Consumer Distress Index, which measures the average financial condition of U.S. households, declined in every single quarter in 2010.
#18 Average household debt in the United States has now reached a level of 136% of average household income.  In China, average household debt is only 17% of average household income.
#19 There are currently more than 4 million Americans that have been unemployed for more than a year.
#20 The U.S. economy now has 10 percent fewer “middle class jobs” than it did just ten years ago.
#21 The average CEO now makes approximately 185 times more money than the average American worker.
#22 According to the U.S. Census, the number of children living in poverty has gone up by about 2 million in just the past 2 years.
Do you need any more evidence that the middle class in the United States is being ripped apart?
The days of wine and roses are over.  The foolish economic policies of the last several decades are now starting to catch up with us and that is going to mean even more economic pain for the middle class.
If you are still part of the middle class, you should be very thankful, because more middle class Americans are falling into poverty every single day.
So what do all of you think about what is happening to the middle class in America?  Please feel free to leave a comment with your opinion below….

22 Statistics That Prove The Elite Are Becoming Fabulously Wealthy While The Middle Class Is Being Ripped To Shreds

The American Dream
Oct 28, 2010

In the United States today, the only group that is “doing better” each year financially is the folks at the very top of the income pyramid.  Everyone else has seen their incomes decline.  Once upon a time, America had a relatively egalitarian system where just about anyone could “pull themselves up by their bootstraps” if they just worked hard enough.  But today, there are millions of Americans that can’t seem to get jobs no matter how hard they try.  Millions of others feel their tenuous hold on the American Dream slipping out of their grasp just a little bit more each month.  The truth is that we don’t have true capitalism in the United States anymore.  Over the past several decades, the financial system in the U.S. has been carefully molded and shaped in such a way that all the wealth is funneled to the elite at the very top and to the monolithic predator corporations that now dominate the global economy.  Power has become concentrated in the hands of very few individuals, and they are nearly impossible to compete against.  If you doubt this, go set up a general store right next to your local Wal-Mart and see how long you can survive.  In America today, the elite are becoming fabulously wealthy and the middle class is being ripped to shreds.  One of the things that our Founding Fathers were extremely concerned about was not allowing too much power to be accumulated in the hands of any one person or institution, but today we have turned our backs on that principle and now we are paying the price.
So what is the solution?  Well, Democrats tell us that we just need to “spread the wealth” a bit more.  But raising taxes and giving people more handouts is not going to solve a thing.  What the American people need are good jobs.
Republicans tell us that if we will just lower taxes on corporations and on the rich that they will hire more American workers and that wealth will “trickle down” to them.
But as we have seen, that is simply not true in today’s world.  The elite have figured out that they don’t really need expensive American workers anymore.  Instead, they can just set up shop on the other side of the world and pay workers less than a tenth of what American workers make.
This new “global economy” is really great for increasing the bonuses of corporate executives, but it is a really bad deal for middle class Americans.  Most Americans do not have any other way to make money other than their labor.  But if millions of our jobs are going to keep being shipped overseas, then where are all of those middle class Americans going to find good jobs?

For decades, our politicians promised us that “free trade” and “globalism” were going to be incredibly beneficial for us.  Well, free trade and globalism have been great for the elite, but they have devastated middle America.
Middle class Americans were never told that they were being merged into a one-world labor market where they would be forced to directly compete for jobs with the cheapest labor on the globe.
If you listen really, really carefully you can hear that “great sucking sound” that Ross Perot once warned us so diligently about.
Once great manufacturing cities that were the envy of the world such as Detroit now resemble post-apocalyptic war zones.
America is being deindustrialized at a blinding pace, and the wealthy are making a lot of money in the process.
So in 2010, the elite are once again bringing in huge bonuses and they are living the high life.  Spending on luxury goods is skyrocketing and the privileged few are enjoying all of the wonderful things that this life has to offer.
Meanwhile, millions of American families are trying to figure out how they are going to pay for heat this winter.
The following are 22 statistics that prove that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer in America today….

#1 Half of all American workers now earn $505 or less per week.
#2 In 2009, total wages, median wages, and average wages all declined in the United States.
#3 The only group that saw their household incomes increase in 2009 was those making $180,000 or more.
#4 According to one recent study, approximately 21 percent of all children in the United States are living below the poverty line in 2010.
#5 In 2009, the median annual wage for a U.S. worker was just $26,261.
#6 In the United States today, 317,000 waiters and waitresses have college degrees.
#7 In 2009, the 74 Americans that earned over 50 million dollars combined to bring in as much as the 19 million lowest paid Americans combined.
#8 According to Harvard Magazine, 66% of the income growth between 2001 and 2007 went to the top 1% of all Americans.
#9 Total student loan debt in the United States is climbing at a rate of approximately $2,853.88 per second.
#10 1.41 million Americans filed for personal bankruptcy in 2009 – a 32 percent increase over 2008.
#11 In 1976, the top 1 percent of earners in the United States took in 8.9 percent of all income.  By 2007, that number had risen to 23.5 percent.
#12 According to a poll taken in 2009, 61 percent of Americans ”always or usually” live paycheck to paycheck.  That was up significantly from 49 percent in 2008 and 43 percent in 2007.
#13 New York state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says that Wall Street bonuses for 2009 were up 17 percent when compared with 2008.
#14 One out of every six Americans is now enrolled in at least one anti-poverty program run by the federal government.
#15 The number of Americans enrolled in the food stamp program passed the 41 million mark for the first time ever in June.
#16 The number of Americans in the food stamp program increased a staggering 55 percent from December 2007 to June 2010.
#17 Over 50 million Americans are on now Medicaid.  That figure is up more than 17 percent since the beginning of the economic downturn.
#18 Only the top 5 percent of all U.S. households have earned enough additional income to match the rise in housing costs since 1975.
#19 According to one recent survey, 28% of all U.S. households have at least one member that is looking for a full-time job.
#20 A recent Pew Research survey found that 55 percent of the U.S. labor force has experienced either unemployment, a pay decrease, a reduction in hours or an involuntary move to part-time work since the economic downturn began.
#21 The number of Americans working part-time jobs “for economic reasons” is now the highest it has been in at least five decades.
#22 The bottom 40 percent of all income earners in the United States now collectively own less than 1 percent of the nation’s wealth.

The Middle Class Will Die Within 30 Years Leaving “A Wealthy Elite & Sprawling Proletariat”

Zero Hedge
May 29, 2014

If we continue down this path of ignorance, we will be left with a “tiny elite and a huge sprawling proletariat” who have no chance of “clawing their way out of a hand-to-mouth existence,” is the loud and clear message from UK government advisor David Boyle. As The Telegraph reports, Boyle cautions, “we won’t own our own homes, we won’t be able to afford it,” adding that “we cheerled the rise of property prices not realising that it would destroy, if not our own lives, but the lives of our children.” His conclusion, “the middle classes have to wake up to prevent it happening and to create a political movement that will do it.”

Authored by Sarah Knapton via The Telegraph,

The middle classes will die out within 30 years because of rising property prices, which will rob today’s children of their dreams, an economist has warned.

David Boyle, a government advisor and fellow of the New Economics Foundation think-tank, said that youngsters can no longer expect the same level of affluence as their parents.

Speaking at the Hay Festival he warned that Britain will be left with a ‘tiny elite and a huge sprawling proletariat’ who have no chance of ‘clawing their way out of a hand-to-mouth existence.’
He predicted that the average house price will reach £1.2 million by 2045, putting a home beyond the range of most people as wages fail to keep up with huge increases.
Boyle said that the traditional middle classes will need three or four jobs just to be able to pay soaring rents. People will no longer have the space or time to pursue cultural interested.
And he blamed bankers bonuses for artificially inflating the property market.
“The really scary thing is if in the next 30 years house prices rise as much as they have done in the last 30 years then the average house in Britain will cost £1.2 million,” he said.
We cheerled the rise of property prices not realising that it would destroy, if not our own lives, but the lives of our children.
“The place where this is heading is a strange society with a tiny elite and a long struggling, straggling line which is the rest of us, a new proletariat, who will be in hock to Landlord PLC.
“We won’t own our own homes, we won’t be able to afford it.
“It will constrain our dreams and constrain the dreams of our children. It’s a new kind of economy where there are no middle classes at all.
“Nobody in society will have the kind of space in their lives, space in their homes, space in their careers for any kind of culture at all, because we will be having three or four jobs to make ends meet
“I think will impoverish society make it more intolerant and make it more difficult to live.”
Boyle claimed that one of the major problems was Margaret Thatcher abandoning The Supplementary Special Deposit Scheme, known as the ‘corset’ which limited how much banks could lend for mortgages.
Although the scheme kept house prices low in the 1970s, Boyle said it was unlikely that today’s buyers would accept having to wait for months for a mortgage.
Instead, he suggests a ‘parallel’ housing market were new homes were sold at the initial price for 100 years.
He predicted that without such a radical solution, mortgages will be inherited and only be paid off by the grandchildren of the original buyer.
“We were rationing mortgages in the 1970s, that’s what kept prices low and I don’t know if we will accept a time again when you have to wait,” he said.
Boyle said the rise in Ukip was fuelled by disaffection of the middle classes.
“You saw this huge revolt. I think what happens when you suppress the dreams of the middle classes is you get rather peculiar and very dangerous political movements beginning to emerge,” he argued.
“That doesn’t forgive people voting in the neo-facists but it does somehow explain it.
Very unequal societies are very inflationary societies and in the end it drives out those other degrees in society until it becomes very flat and very desperate.
The middle classes have to wake up to prevent it happening and to create a political movement that will do it. I don’t think Ukip is it.
“You could say that it doesn’t matter and that a more classless society would be a good thing.
“I think if there is no place in the middle that anywhere can go to claw their way out of desperate hand to mouth existence, and the precariat, then that condemns us all to a precarious existence because there is no ladder.”
Boyle sits on the Liberal Democrat’s federal policy committee and was commissioned to write a report into access to public services by the government, which was published last year.

Memorial Day Message to Veterans: Government Considers You the Enemy

Kurt Nimmo
Prison Planet.com
May 26, 2014

Earlier today, Obama appeared at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery for a photo op. From The Washington Post:
Obama, aided by a soldier in uniform, rested the large wreath on a stand a few minutes after 11 a.m. Monday. The president adjusted the wreath, stepped back and bowed his head in silence for a few moments. Afterward, an Army bugler played taps.
Later he appeared at the cemetery’s Memorial Amphitheater to read from a script. “We’re in a pivotal moment. Our troops are coming home. By the end of this year, our war in Afghanistan will finally come to an end,” he recited.
“These Americans have done their duty. They ask nothing more than that our country does ours, for now and the decades to come,” Obama said.
But, as the VA scandal and countless other examples reveal, the government considers veterans as little more than third class citizens, props to be rolled out on Memorial Day as homage is ritually paid to the state and its endless wars.
The booboisie, as H. L. Mencken described the forever gullible and easily bamboozled American public, were practically knocking down the gates to get in to witness this annual worship of state violence:
Before the ceremony, a large number of people were turned away from the cemetery’s entrances by security personnel who said that the event was at capacity.
When the government is not praising veterans for their “service” in foreign wars of conquest and other illegal activity driven primarily by the financial elite – see Smedley Butler, below – it spends a lot of time demonizing veterans as enemies of the state:

The Future Of Socialized Healthcare: “There Is No Better Predictor Than The VA System”

Mac Slavo
SHTFplan.com
May 23, 2014

It was just a couple of months ago that President Obama declared a victory in the battle for affordable health care.

“Many of the tall tales that have been told about this law have been debunked.  There are still no death panels.  (Laughter.)  Armageddon has not arrived.  Instead, this law is helping millions of Americans, and in the coming years it will help millions more.”
Perhaps Armageddon hasn’t arrived for those who have been allowed to keep their platinum health insurance because of exemptions granted by the administration. But for the rest of us, a Healthcare Armageddon is a foregone conclusion.
Economically and financially, the new law will bankrupt an already struggling middle class who has, in many cases, seen a four-fold increase in their monthly premiums. By all accounts, life for those people is going to change dramatically in coming years because as much as 15% of their income will now be taken from them by force in the form of what the U.S. Supreme Court has classified as a mandated tax.
For those with the ability to make those outrageous payments and deductibles each year, they have now entered a system run by the very same bureaucrats in charge of our country’s other government run health care programs.
To understand the future of socialized health care in America we need to look no further than the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
As noted in the transcript of Obama’s speech above, the audience laughed when the President mentioned the conspiracy theory surrounding death panels. While the law itself makes no mention of “death panels,” they certainly exist and this fact can’t just be “debunked” as the President would like us to believe.
You could ask the scores of Veterans who were pencil-pushed to the back of the line by the VA in Phoenix and Houston, except for the fact that they died while awaiting the medical assistance they were promised.

And while the deaths of these service members is tragic and almost unbelievable, it is just the tip of the iceberg. Tens of thousands of our veterans are shuffled around within the system, often times for budgetary reasons or because their physician is just is simply too apathetic to care. If you need real medical care, for example, which often starts with a diagnosis that may include testing like an X-ray or an MRI, it’s common for VA physicians to simply ignore the patient’s need and jump right into prescribing pain medication. There are countless stories like this, where patients literally waited years to receive a real diagnosis, only to see their condition worsen and become inoperable by the time testing was completed because it was ignored for so long.
That very system which has ignored those men and women who have put their lives on the line for this country and has promised to care for them is now the same system that’s in charge of medical care under the Patient Affordable Care Act. In fact, if recent history is any guide, the mandates under Obamacare are going to be much, much worse:
One conclusion we can draw is an old, familiar one: No matter what the issue or activity, bureaucracy’s first and strongest instinct is to protect itself in the face of a perceived threat.
Another conclusion is probably just dawning on those Americans with the wit to see it, because so very few of us have had a brush with a medical system of which government is the sole proprietor: Putting a government bureaucracy in charge of one’s health is a gamble likely to end badly.
And yet, if Obamacare stands, that is precisely the gamble each and every American eventually will take.
There is no better predictor of the course of a single-payer medical system in the United States than the VA system, because it is a single-payer system.
If an enrolled patient needs something done, he or she applies to the government-run system for approval; waits until the government-run system is ready to act; accepts the government-run system’s solution or, if dissatisfied, appeals to that same government-run system for relief. Because the bureaucracy pays the bill, the bureaucracy makes the decisions — when or if treatment will be given, and whether or not the patient has been well enough served.
In the VA system, it has recently come to light, scores of patients somehow got stuck on the second step of the bureaucratic flow chart: waiting. Their medical problems apparently were not deemed pressing enough to get them into a doctor’s examining room.
The death panels may not exist by name, but they most assuredly exist within the bureaucracy managed by the U.S. government.
We’re not making this up, it’s no conspiracy, and it cannot be debunked, as evidenced by the experiences of actual people currently enrolled in the Obamacare system:
Obamacare is denied at most cancer hospitals according to a recent Associated Press survey. Only four out of 19 of the nation’s best cancer hospitals who replied to the survey said they will accept patient’s insurance from all of the healthcare exchanges within their state, in effect excluding most people who are signing up for coverage under the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare.
In simple terms: If you get cancer you will not get medical care.
This is, by every possible definition, nothing short of a death panel. With the Patient Affordable Care Act, we have no other choice but the health insurance prescribed by the government. And cancer treatment is not covered according to the hospitals that are supposed to provide it!
Just wait until you see what happens when these bureaucrats realize that the medical system is underfunded because healthy people, especially young adults, refuse to sign up. You see, Obamacare is, in essence, a Ponzi scheme that requires one group to continually provide funding in order to pay off the needs of another group.
Despite that claimed number of 7.1 million Americans having signed up since the program’s inception, a recent report indicates that as many as half of the enrollees missed their first insurance payment. One reason for this might be the exorbitant costs associated with the coverage (not counting the deductibles!).
As these liabilities begin to pile up and not enough people sign up to make up the difference, guess what happens.
Again, in simple terms, An Instantaneous Collapse of Obamacare Services:
First, if you’re “27″, the average premium is $266.20/month or $3,194.40 per year.  How many 27 year olds have an extra $3,200 to spend on this?  Remember, this is the price that virtually every uninsured 27 year old must be willing — and able — to cough up in order to prevent the model this system is predicated on from collapsing.
If those 27 year olds don’t show up, and they won’t, then the system collapses instantly.  If they do show up because the government threatens them with fines the economy collapses as $3,200 a year exceeds the average 27 year old’s disposable personal income after mandatory expenses (e.g. food, shelter, etc.)  Remember, there are always exceptions but these premiums are averages and over large pools of people the statistical averages are what matters — not the ends of the barbell.
While the law may never be repealed and everybody who signed up thinks they still have health insurance, when it matters most there won’t be a doctor on the list who’ll be willing to help you. Why? Because the government will outright deny the medical services because it is broke and they’ll simply refuse to pay the doctor to provide it.
That’s what we can call a De Facto death panel.
They had them back in the old Communist days of the East Bloc. It wasn’t by name, of course, but rather, by action.
People used to stand in hours-long lines just to be seen for an ear infection or to receive antibiotics, unless of course you could throw the doc a little summin-summin under the table. Then you were prioritized.
Eastern Europeans and Soviet Russians who lived under the red banner prior to 1989 will tell you, “You don’t go to the hospital to live longer, you go there to die.”
This is the same system we now have in place in America, despite the fact that ear wax eating Congressman Joe Garcia claimed just this week that democrats haveproven Communism works.
It works great for people like the Congressman who suck off the tax payer teat, enjoy free platinum health care coverage, and dine at premier ear wax eateries around D.C.
For the rest of us, however, Communism works about as well as it did for the millions of slaves who eventually tore down the Berlin Wall to escape its stranglehold.

Italian MEP: ‘Bilderberg is the Root of All Evil’

European Parliament member blames secretive group for wrecking Italy’s economy

May 19, 2014

As the secretive group gears up for its annual confab in Copenhagen next week, Italian Member of the European Parliament Mario Borghezio has slammed the Bilderberg group as being “the root of all evil,” blaming the organization for Italy’s economic crisis.

Borghezio, who is a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs in the European Parliament and a prominent Italian politician, appears in a video in which he denounces Bilderberg as “the root of all evil that afflicts Italy,” blaming the group for causing unemployment, poverty, and high taxes.
Borghezio is supported by Italian lawyer Alfonso Luigi Marra, who last year requested that the Public Prosecutor of Rome investigate the Bilderberg Group for its role in “criminal activity.” Marra accused the group of plotting to install Mario Monti as Prime Minister of Italy at Bilderberg’s 2011 meeting in Switzerland, labeling the organization a “unique, illegal brotherhood” of elitists who consider themselves to be “above the law.”
In the video, Borghezio, who is running in the EU Parliamentary elections, takes a swipe at Italy’s political class, asserting, “(Mario) Monti and (former Italian Prime Minister Enrico) Letta are members of the Bilderberg, while (current Prime Minister Matteo) Renzi is their puppet.”
Counter to clichés peddled by the mainstream media that Bilderberg merely represents a “talking shop,” there are innumerable examples of the clandestine group formulating the consensus for policy which is implemented soon after.
In 2010, former NATO Secretary-General and Bilderberg member Willy Claes admitted that Bilderberg attendees are mandated to implement decisions that are formulated during the annual conference of power brokers. If this is the case, it would violate laws in numerous countries that forbid politicians from being influenced by foreign agents in secret.
In 2009, Bilderberg chairman Étienne Davignon even bragged about how the Euro single currency was a brainchild of the Bilderberg Group.
Borghezio’s charge that Bilderberg had a hand in wrecking Italy’s economy is also noteworthy given that the group conspired to set the stage for the housing market and economic collapse at their 2006 meeting in Ottawa Canada, two years before the 2008 financial crisis.
In 2011, Borghezio attempted to enter the site of the Bilderberg meeting in St. Moritz, Switzerland but was beaten and arrested by Bilderberg security.
The 2014 Bilderberg Group meeting will take place at the 5 star Marriott Hotel in Copenhagen from May 29-June 1. Infowars reporters will be live on the scene throughout the week.

Militarist Bunkum

Did you know that 85 to 90 percent of war’s casualties are non-combatant civilians? That is the conclusion reached by a nine-person research team in the June 2014 issue of the American Journal of Public Health. The deaths of soldiers who are fighting the war are a small part of the human and economic cost. Clearly, wars do not protect the lives of civilians. The notion that soldiers are dying for us is false. Non-combatants are the main victims of war.
Keep that in mind for July 4th, which is arriving in six weeks.
July 4th is America’s most important national holiday celebrating American independence from Great Britain. On July 4th, 1776, America’s Founding Fathers declared that the Thirteen Colonies were no longer colonies but an independent country in which the Rights of Englishmen would prevail for all citizens and not only for King George’s administrators. (Actually, the Second Continental Congress voted in favor of independence on July 2, and historians debate whether the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4 or August 2.)
In this American assertion of self-determination citizens of Great Britain were not allowed to vote. Therefore, according to Washington’s position on the votes in Crimea and in eastern Ukraine–the former Russian territories of Donetsk and Luhansk–America’s Declaration of Independence was “illegitimate and illegal.”
On July 4th all across America there will be patriotic speeches about our soldiers who gave their lives for their country. To an informed person these speeches are curious. I am hard pressed to think of any examples of our soldiers giving their lives for our country. US Marine General Smedley Butler had the same problem. He said that his Marines gave their lives for United Fruit Company’s control of Central America. “War is a racket,” said General Butler, pointing out that US participation in World War I produced 21,000 new American millionaires and billionaires.
When General Butler said “war is a racket,” he meant that war is a racket for a few people getting rich on the backs of millions of dead people. According to the article in the American Journal of Public Health, during the 20th century 190 million deaths could be directly and indirectly related to war.
190 million is 60 million more than the entire US population in the year that I was born.

The only war fought on US territory was the war against Southern Secession. In this war Irish immigrants fresh off the boat gave their lives for American Empire. As soon as the South was conquered, the Union forces were set loose on the Plains Indians and destroyed them as well.
Empire over life. That has always been Washington’s guiding principle.
America’s wars have always been fought elsewhere–Cuba, Haiti, Mexico, Philippines, Japan, Germany, Korea, Vietnam, Panama, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Somalia. Washington even attacks countries with which the US is not at war, such as Pakistan and Yemen, and engages in proxy wars. The article cited above reports: “The United States launched 201 overseas military operations between the end of World War II and 2001, and since then, others, including Afghanistan and Iraq.”
Not a single one of these wars and military operations had anything whatsoever to do with defending the US population from foreign threats.
Not even Japan and Germany posed a threat to the US. Neither country had any prospect of invading the US and neither country had any such war plans.
Let’s assume Japan had conquered China, Burma, and Indonesia. With such a vast territory to occupy, Japan could not have spared a single division with which to invade the US, and, of course, any invasion fleet would never have made it across the Pacific. Just as was the fate of the Japanese fleet at Midway, an invasion fleet would have been sitting ducks for the US Navy.
Assume Germany had extended its conquests over Europe to Great Britain, Russia and North Africa. Germany would have been unable to successfully occupy such a vast territory and could not have spared a single soldier to send to invade America. Even the US superpower was unable to successfully occupy Iraq and Afghanistan, countries with small land areas and populations in comparison.
Except for its wars against the South, the Plains Indians, Haiti, Spain, Panama, Grenada, and Mexico, the US has never won a war. The Southern Confederates, usually outnumbered, often defeated the Union generals. Japan was defeated by its own lack of military resources. Germany was defeated by the Soviet Union. The allied invasion of Normandy did not occur until June 6, 1944, by which time the Red Army had ground up the Wehrmacht.
When the allies landed in Normandy, three-fourths of the German Army was on the Russian front. The allied invasion was greatly helped by Germany’s shortage of fuel for mobilized units. If Hitler had not allowed hubris to lead him into invading the Soviet Union and, instead, just sat on his European conquests, no allied invasion would have been possible. Today Germany would rule all of Europe, including the UK. The US would have no European Empire with which to threaten Russia, China, and the Middle East.
In Korea in the 1950s, General Douglas MacArthur, victorious over Japan, was fought to a standstill by third world China. In Vietnam American technological superiority was defeated by a third world army. The US rolled up mighty Grenada in the 1980s, but lost its proxy war against the Sandinistas in Nicaragua.
Is there anyone so foolish as to think that Grenada or the Sandinistas were a threat to the United States, that North Korea or North Vietnam comprised threats to the United States? Yet, the Korean and Vietnam wars were treated as if the fate of the United States hung in the balance. The conflicts produced voluminous dire predictions and strategic debates. The communist threat replaced the Hitler threat. The American Empire was at risk from third world peoples. Dominoes would fall everywhere.
Currently Washington is at work overturning President Reagan’s accomplishment of ending the Cold War. Washington orchestrated a coup that overthrew the elected government of Ukraine and installed a stooge government. Washington’s stooges began issuing threats against Russia and the Russian speaking population in Ukraine. These threats resulted in those parts of Ukraine that were formerly part of Russia declaring their independence. Washington blames Russia, not itself, and is stirring the pot, demonizing Russia and recreating the Cold War with military deployments in the Baltics and Eastern Europe. Washington needs to reinvent the Cold War in order to justify the hundreds of billions of dollars that Washington annually feeds the military/security complex, some of which recycles in political campaign donations. In contrast to Washington’s propaganda, an honest view of the events in Ukraine can be found here: http://www.claritypress.com/LendmanIII.html
In the United States patriotism and militarism have become synonyms. This July 4th find the courage to remind the militarists that Independence Day celebrates the Declaration of Independence, not the American Empire. The Declaration of Independence was not only a declaration of independence from King George III but also a declaration of independence from unaccountable tyrannical government. The oath of office commits the US officeholder to the defense of the US Constitution from enemies ”foreign and domestic.”
In the 21st century Americans’ worst enemies are not al Qaeda, Iran, Russia, and China. America’s worst enemies are our own presidents who have declared repeatedly that the orchestrated “war on terror” gives them the right to set aside the civil liberties guaranteed to every citizen by the US Constitution. Having stripped US citizens of their civil liberties, executive branch agencies are now stocking up vast amounts of ammunition, and the Department of Agriculture has placed an order for submachine guns. The Department for Homeland Security has acquired 2,717 mine-resistant armored personnel carriers. Congress and the media are not interested in why the executive branch is arming itself so heavily against the American people.
During the entirely of the 21st century–indeed, dating from the Clinton regime at the end of the 20th century–the executive branch has declared its independence from law (both domestic and international) and from the Constitution, Congress, and the Judiciary. The executive branch, with the help of the Republican Federalist Society, has established that the office of the executive is a tyranny unaccountable to law, domestic or international, as long as the executive declares a state of war, even a war that is not conducted against another country or countries but a vague, undefined or ill-defined war against a vague stateless enemy such as al Qaeda, with which the US is currently allied against Syria.
Al Qaeda now has a dual role. Al Qaeda is Washington’s agent for overthrowing the elected Assad government in Syria and al Qaeda is the evil force against which US civil liberties must be sacrificed.
The illegitimate power asserted by the Office of the President is not only a threat to every American but also to every living being on planet earth. As the article cited above reports: “Approximately 17,300 nuclear weapons are presently deployed in at least 9 countries, many of which can be launched and reach their targets within 45 minutes.”
It only takes one fool–and Washington has thousands of fools–and all life on earth terminates in 45 minutes. The neoconservative belief that the United States is the exceptional, indispensable country chosen by history to rule the earth is a belief full of the arrogance and hubris that lead to war.
Keep your likely fate in mind as you watch the military bands and marches on July 4th and listen to the hot air of militarism.

Obamacare: Cash for Crony Capitalism

Feds spent $5 billion to get state Obamacare exchanges operational

Kurt Nimmo

May 16, 2014

Maryland, Massachusetts, Oregon and Nevada have gone through nearly a half billion dollars building inoperable Obamacare websites for vastly overpriced state exchanges. For government, though, nothing succeeds like failure, especially if it rewards selected partners in crime, so the feds will continue with little resistance to pour millions of dollars more down these rat holes.

Vermont, Minnesota and Hawaii have also squandered millions on websites for exchanges that are either inoperable or fatally flawed. Remarkably, in Hawaii, the cost per enrollee is $23,899, double that of other exchanges.
“Taxpayers will have to pay whether their state-based exchange fails or not,” Josh Archambault, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Government Accountability, told The Fiscal Times.
The feds have spent near $5 billion to get state exchanges for Obamacare operational. A key tenet of crony capitalism is if project fails or does not work, the government will continue to shovel money into it. In Oregon, for instance, technical contractors hired by the state “may have boosted billings by ‘throwing bodies rather than skillset’ at problems.” For unscrupulous website developers, the federal government is viewed as a gravy train the size of a massive Honda Fit mining truck.
Malfunctioning and inoperable websites are merely indicative of a larger problem – dysfunctional Obamacare exchanges. In total, as of February, 14 states have received federal money to get Obamacare exchanges up. California alone received a whopping $1 billion to set-up its exchange.

Billions of dollars down the rat hole later, the Congressional Government Accountability Office has launched a probe into how well the federal government provided oversight into all of the “troubled” state exchanges.
Despite the promise of investigation and transparency, the federal gravy train with its ladle of expropriated cash stolen from producers at gunpoint will continue to parcel out cash for the Obamacare boondoggle.
“Cash for Clunkers, for all its faults, was at least a limited-time program,” writes Michael Tennant. “ObamaCare, on the other hand, is intended to continue forever, and it is just beginning. There is no question that it will easily outpace Cash for Clunkers — and perhaps almost all other federal programs — in the contest to see which can squander the most cash.”
The entire Obamacare scam sadly reveals how inexplicably entrenched crony capitalism is in America. “This monstrous government scam could never have been enacted into law without the support of crony capitalists who joined Obama and the Democratic Party in selling this socialist scheme to the American people,” writes Tom Tancredo.
“What Obamacare illustrates is that the most dangerous and expensive form of crony capitalism is not ‘insider trading’ or sweetheart contracts that give an advantage to one company over others. The most far-reaching damage to our prosperity and our freedom occurs when whole industries join with government to carve out ‘new markets’ and new customers for regulated and government-provided products. Obamacare is crony capitalism on steroids.”

Podesta: Congress Can’t Stop Obama On Global Warming

Michael Bastasch
Daily Caller
May 5, 2014

White House adviser John Podesta told reporters Monday afternoon that Congress could not derail the Obama administration’s efforts to unilaterally enact policies to fight global warming.
Podesta said that the president was committed to using executive orders to pass regulations under the Clean Air Act to limit carbon dioxide emissions that they say cause global warming.
“They may try, but there are no takers at this end of Pennsylvania Avenue,” Podesta told reporters at a Monday press conference at the White House.
Republicans and some Democrats in Congress have urged the Obama administration to scale back their climate goals because of the adverse impact of new regulations on the coal industry. Coal supporters have portrayed the administration’s actions as the “war on coal” due to huge job losses in coal states like Kentucky and West Virginia.

Why Jesus Was REALLY Killed: Challenging the Money Changers

 Washington’s Blog
April 21, 2014

Modern interpretation of Christ driving the money changers from the temple by Anthony Freda/Daniel Zollinger

Why Jesus Was Killed
Preface: If you are an atheist and believe that religion is crazy, please remember that some 85% of the American population identifies itself as Christian and millions more identify themselves as Jewish. Very few Americans are atheists … and the majority don’t trust atheists. Therefore, knowing a few bible verses might be helpful for atheists speaking to people of faith.
Reverend Howard Bess notes:
Jesus did not go to the temple to cleanse. He came to the temple to announce the destruction of a whole way of life. Those who operated the temple had no power to silence Jesus and put him to death. Those powers were held by the Roman retainers.
The charges that were leveled against him can be summed up as insurrection. There were three specific charges: encouraging non-payment of taxes, threatening to destroy property (the temple), and claiming to be a king. It was the temple incident that took Jesus from being an irritating, but harmless country rebel from the rural north to a nuisance in a city that controlled the great tradition. Rome’s retainers killed him on a cross.
In other words, Jesus wasn’t sentenced to death until he challenged the money changers.

What Does it Mean to Do God’s Work?
The head of Goldman Sachs said he’s doing “God’s work” with his banking activities.
The head of Barclays also told his congregation that banking as practiced by his company was not antithetical to Christian principles.
Are they right? Is big banking as practiced by the giant banks in harmony with Christian principles?

Do Justice
Initially, the Bible does not counsel us to ignore the breaking of laws by the the powerful.
In fact, the Bible mentions justice over 200 times — more than just about any other topic. The Bible asks us to do justice and to stand up to ANYONE — including the rich or powerful — who do injustice or oppress the people.
Indeed, one of the first things God asks of us is to do justice:
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8)
While many churches and synagogues have become obsessed with other issues, many have arguably ignored this most important of God’s demands of us. As pointed out by a leading Christian ministry, which rescues underage girls trapped as sex slaves in third world countries:
In Scripture there is a constant call to seek justice. Jesus got upset at the Pharisees because they neglected the weightier matters of the law, which He defined as justice and the love of God . . . Isaiah 58 complains about the fact that while the people of God are praying and praying and praying, they are not doing anything about the injustice.
Should Christians just pray for justice and leave the rest to God?
That’s not what the Bible asks us to do. Instead, Hebrews 11:33 tells us that we are God’s hands for dispensing justice, and God uses us to “administer justice.”
We have to “walk our talk” and put our prayers into action.
God demands that we do everything in our power to act as “God’s hands” in bringing justice. And as Saint Augustine reminds us, “Charity is no substitute for justice withheld.”
Indeed:
The Lord looked and was displeased that there was no justice. He saw that there was no one, He was appalled that there was no one to intervene. (Isaiah 59:15-16)
This is the only place in the Bible where the word “appalled” is used for the way God feels — in other words, the only thing which we know God is appalled by is if people are not doing justice.
There are hundreds of other references to justice in the Bible, including:
  • Blessed are they who maintain justice . . . . (Psalm 106:3)
  • This is what the LORD says: Maintain justice and do what is right . . . . (Isiah 56:1)
  • This is what the LORD says: Do what is just and right. (Jeremiah 22:3,13-17)
  • Follow justice and justice alone. (Deuteronomy 16:19, 20)
  • For the LORD is righteous, he loves justice . . . . (Job 11:5,7)
  • Learn to do right! Seek justice . . . . (Isaiah 1:17)
So if the powerful players in the giant banks broke the laws, they must be held to account.

Fraud and Manipulation of Money
The big banks have engaged in systemic, continuous ongoing criminal fraud.
Allowing the banks to commit crime with impunity is not what Jesus would do. What would Jesus do? Turn over the tables of the money-changers. (economists agree.)
Moreover, the giant banks manipulate currency through the use of schemes such as manipulating interest rates (gaming interest rates in different regions – Libor, Eurobor, etc. – can in turn drive their currencies up or down), high frequency trading and artificially suppressing gold prices (which artificially inflates the value of fiat money) .
As Ron Paul notes, the Bible forbids altering the quality of money (which, at the time and place, was entirely in the form of coins):
Even the Bible is clear that altering the quality of money is an immoral act. We are instructed to follow the rules of “just weights and measures.” “You shall do no injustice in judgment, in measurement of length, weight, or volume. You shall have just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin” (Leviticus 19:35-36). “Diverse weights are an abomination to the LORD, and a false balance is not good” (Proverbs 20:23). The general principle can be summed as “You shall not steal.”
Proverbs 11:1 also provides:
Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is His delight.
So to the extent that the giant banks have engaged in any dishonest acts or the manipulation of currencies, they are violating scripture.

Oppression of the Poor
The Bible condemns oppression of the poor for the benefit of the affluent:
He that oppresses the poor to increase his riches, and he that gives to the rich, shall surely come to want. (Proverbs 22:16)
To the extent that the giant banks have oppressed the poor to increase their riches, they are violating scripture.
Due to their looting, inequality is now worse in American than in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, most Latin American banana republics … and ancient Rome.

Waging War
Bankers are often the driving force behind war. “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9), and Jesus would not have taken kindly to waging wars for profit based upon false pretenses.

Resurrection: Christ’s Ministry
Christ – and his ministry – lives to the extent that we act as God’s hands to confront the big banks which are warping our economy and our world.

Postscript: Not all bankers are bad people. For example, many bankers at smaller banks and credit unions are good people who are trying to help their communities. Each must be judged by his own acts.

LA County Sheriff Admits Big Brother Is Here “But We Kept It Pretty Hush Hush”

Zero Hedge
May 5, 2014

This is the future if nothing is done to stop it,” is the ominous way The Atlantic describes the recent Big Brother tactics used by LA County Sheriffs to “police” areas such as Compton. Residents were unaware (“A lot of people do have a problem with the eye in the sky, the Big Brother, so to mitigate those kinds of complaints we basically kept it pretty hush hush“)that, as the police stated, “we literally watched all of Compton during the times that we were flying, so we could zoom in anywhere within the city of Compton and follow cars and see people,” as they trialled a new system which if adopted, would mean Americans can be policed like Iraqis and Afghanis under occupation. As The Atlantic concludes, the sheriff didn’t conclude that the “wide area surveillance” wouldn’t be like Big Brother after all, just that Big Brother capabilities would help to solve more crimes… so why not tryout mass surveillance?

As The Atltantic reports,
In a secret test of mass surveillance technology, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department sent a civilian aircraft over Compton, California, capturing high-resolution video of everything that happened inside that 10-square-mile municipality.
Compton residents weren’t told about the spying, which happened in 2012. “We literally watched all of Compton during the times that we were flying, so we could zoom in anywhere within the city of Compton and follow cars and see people,” Ross McNutt of Persistence Surveillance Systems told the Center for Investigative Reporting, which unearthed and did the first reporting on this important story. The technology he’s trying to sell to police departments all over America can stay aloft for up to six hours. Like Google Earth, it enables police to zoom in on certain areas. And like TiVo, it permits them to rewind, so that they can look back and see what happened anywhere they weren’t watching in real time.
If it’s adopted, Americans can be policed like Iraqis and Afghanis under occupation…

Sgt. Douglas Iketani acknowledges that his agency hid the experiment to avoid public opposition. “This system was kind of kept confidential from everybody in the public,”he said. ”A lot of people do have a problem with the eye in the sky, the Big Brother, so to mitigate those kinds of complaints we basically kept it pretty hush hush.” That attitude ought to get a public employee summarily terminated.
“Our first initial thought was, oh, Big Brother, we’re going to have a camera flying over us. But with the wide area surveillance you would have the ability to solve a lot of the unsolvable crimes with no witnesses, no videotape surveillance, no fingerprints.”
Notice that he didn’t conclude that the “wide area surveillance” wouldn’t be like Big Brother after all, just that Big Brother capabilities would help to solve more crimes.
So why not try them out?
He later explains that while the public may think its against this, we’ll get used to it:
I’m sure that once people find out this experiment went on they might be a little upset. But knowing that we can’t see into their bedroom windows, we can’t see into their pools, we can’t see into their showers. You know, I’m sure they’ll be okay with it. With the amount of technology out in today’s age, with cameras in ATMs, at every 7/11, at every supermarket, pretty much every light poll, all the license plate cameras, the red light cameras, people have just gotten used to being watched.
Many Americans elect their own sheriffs. This is the future if nothing is done to stop them.

How Much Is $1 Trillion — Besides Half the Federal Regulatory Cost?

Bob Adelmann
New American
May 2, 2014

The Competitive Enterprise Institute’s Wayne Crews has a problem. For years now he has been updating the CEI’s “Ten Thousand Commandments,” the organization’s “Annual Snapshot of the Federal Regulatory State,” but the numbers, despite his best efforts, are simply beyond human comprehension.
But he continues to try, nevertheless. He says that the regulatory state takes another $2 trillion out of the economy, partly due to the costs associated with regulating everything from corn syrup to potted plants and partly due to the cost of making sure everyone is following the rules. That means, in the grand scale, the real cost of the federal government isn’t $3.7 trillion — the budget — but it’s more like $5.5 trillion, or about a third of the entire country’s output.
Crews is a clever guy. Not only a VP at CEI, he writes widely elsewhere, including for Forbes. He speaks, he writes books, and he’s the father of four. He’s had his articles published all over, including the Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, theWashington Post, and Investors’ Business Daily.
He’s also able to do a handstand on his skateboard.
When it comes to measuring the cost of the federal regulatory state, however, he’ll have to do more than a handstand. He measures the cost of the regulatory state, for example, by the number of pages it takes in the Federal Register — 79,311 in just one year — to list them. He says that the average family, with an average income of $$65,596, will “pay” $15,000 in regulatory costs, or about 30 percent of the family’s income, buried in the price of that corn syrup and potted plant.
He says that if the regulatory state were a separate country, it would be in the top 10 of all countries in the world, bigger even than Canada or Australia. This doesn’t count the regulatory costs levied on small businesses, either. Companies with fewer than 20 employees pay more than $10,000 a year, per employee, to pay for the regulations, while larger firms pay less per employee but much more in total.
The trouble is, most people can’t imagine a trillion dollars, let alone $2 trillion. Most people can’t even imagine a million dollars. So, next year Crews should talk to the young people behind the Youth Film Festival (YFF) who have successfully stretched the brain to begin to fathom just how much a trillion dollars is, and, as a result, just how large the federal regulatory state really is.

YFF measures a trillion in time:
How long ago is a trillion seconds?
If you count backward, 1 million seconds is 12 days ago.
1 billion seconds is 31 years ago.
A trillion seconds? 30,000 B.C.
They measure a trillion in height:
How high is a trillion in $1,000 bills?
1 million dollars is 4 inches high.
1 billion dollars is 364 feet high.
1 trillion dollars is … are you ready? … 63 miles high!
These are stacks, not end-to-end. And these are $1,000 bills!
They measure a trillion in money:
With about 300 million people and about 100 million households in the US:
1 million dollars is 3 cents per household.
1 billion dollars is $3.28 per person and $9 per household.
1 trillion dollars is $3,280 per person and $9,000 per household.
They measure a trillion in annual salary:
If a person’s salary is $40,000 a year:
It would take him 25 years to earn $1 million.
It would take him 25,000 years to earn $1 billion.
And … it would take him 25 million years to earn $1 trillion.
Finally, when it comes to saving:
If a person lived to age 80,
To have $1 million in savings by then he would have to save $34 every day.
To have $1 billion in savings by then he would have to save $34,000 every day.
And to have $1 trillion in savings by then he would have to save … ready? … $34 million every day of his life!

The one thing Crews doesn’t estimate is how to cut the government down to a conceivable size. One answer is to look to the people who created the massive government spending and regulatory bodies in the first place: the politicians. Given sufficient incentive, a politician can be persuaded to vote to cut government, or else find other work. Since most politicians are holding the best job — the highest-paying job — they’re ever imagined, the thought of losing that job and having to find work in the real world is a strong incentive to keep his supporters happy. If they want him to cut spending, he will too.
Just ask the folks at the Youth Film Festival how those numbers might work out.
